Thanks Amy.
I started working as the hired photographer, who was I fooling "shooting and running". "Yes lady, I took that shot! I am here to do that, and yes I just took one more :-)". Thanks Hay.
I felt smoother, I felt like I was sliding, sometimes I felt I was floating even (just weird, difficult to explain).

Overall. I still think that I sucked as a PJ last night, but I definitely feel that I was much different and, strangely enough, I ended up less tired than most weddings. Smiles and hugs abound. The bonding begins almost immediately. Sunday night we were treated to an amazing Mexican feast at the home of Huy's business partner, Gary D. The food and company was fabulous. We all left there with full bellies and happy spirits.

Monday began early as we were transported to the Storybook Ranch for a day of seminars.

A personal note: David Leeson was my team leader. I first noticed him on Monday, standing toward the back of the group, ball cap down low on his face, a stubble of a beard, and very quiet. When he was introduced as the first speaker a new friend sitting next to me agreed; “Whoa- He looks INTENSE!" And for about two minutes I was rather nervous about being in David's group.
Then David began to speak.

There was a connection to his words that made myself and, I'm sure, the rest of my group feel immediately at ease and ready for an amazing workshop. Like David, the rest of the speakers were, in a word, inspirational. Cheryl was completely profound and articulate. Huy was, as usual, filled with fall-out-of-your-chair inspiration. The day ended with Amy giving us inspiration and encouragement through her wonderful photography and heartfelt convictions for making images.

That evening we met in our small groups (and the fun began). The team leaders gave out our assignments as we sat in the small groups and this was the first time we each were privy to what we were to shoot over the next two days.

For the most part, many of the Life assignments were rather difficult b/c we had to FIND the story in the assignment. The "story" was not laid out for us. This gave us the opportunity to get out of our comfort zone w/ weddings. In a wedding we KNOW the story. We know whom to shoot and why. But here in the workshop we had to put our skills and instincts to work to FIND what was worthwhile and create a photo essay from our findings.

My assignment was the SPCA (where I was promised 161 fighting roosters but was sadly let down by humane people who saved the roosters before I arrived for my assignment- oh the disappointment!). So I prepared myself to find a story somewhere between the cute little puppies and sweet little cats. Other assignments were similar (a Christian school, a truck stop, a SWAT team, a fire station, a sheep farm... find the story)

Tuesday we shot all day. After our assignments we came back to the hotel for an evening of critique with our team leaders and coaches. It was long, exhausting and, mostly, it was a struggle. No one was able to get lost in the shuffle of the workshop. No one was able to skate by in their assignment. Everyone was humbled after that first day of shooting. I can say honestly that I saw men and women alike shed some tears. Not bawling, hysterical tears, but rather tears of frustration and exhaustion. There were feelings of humbleness and of relief that the whole "being exposed" part of the process was over and we could all now go on and shoot with out egos or fear.

Basically we were broken down to a point where our individual pride or comfort zone was no longer an issue. Once we were down to that point, there was nowhere else to go but up.
David Murray had a great way of explaining it. He said, "This is a re-birth."

After an intense first day, we all went BACK out to our assignments on Wednesday and re-shot the whole thing. Some people shot to finish their photo essay. Some people started over with a new story. And some people just wanted to go home. The rest of the day/night Wednesday and all day Thursday we went through our images with our team leaders and edited (”Feel the PAIN of editing OUT an image you are married to!"). David had a great lesson for our team in editing, and we had some lively and thought-provoking conversations about 'tight edits', how many images we give in our weddings, and what impact that number of images may (or may not) have on our clients.

On Thursday night the workshop again provided a fabulous meal at a gorgeous location in downtown Dallas. I'm sorry I can't remember the name of where we were. But suffice it to say it was a very nice atmosphere and a pleasant way to end the week. Oh yeah, and the OPEN BAR certainly helped the happy, shiny feelings as well.

During our farewell party each group presented a slideshow of each, individual assignment. It was so awesome to see the assignments and the GROWTH each photographer had during the week. Seeing the thought process take a NEW turn for each photographer during the week was totally amazing. Again, it was a re-birth.

A personal note; once we got our assignments on Monday night to presenting the images on Thursday night I slept a TOTAL of about 5-6 hours. And even those naps weren't solid sleep. They were restless and difficult, filled with my thoughts on various comments about my images, conversations with David, discussions with my team coaches (Bill H. and Tyler W.- AMAZING coaches and completely FABULOUS people!), and searching my soul to see WHERE I could possibly pull any more out of myself to put into a stupid story about cats and dogs. Heh.

But in the end I think I found something inside. In the end I found a passion and a way to see "beneath the emulsion."

The workshop was an experience I am so thankful to have shared.

The End.

FW4 for Scott

Well I must have caught a few bugs at least from the past week with everyone... Aside from a runny nose I took away a new skill of being able to engage people on their own level and outside of my comfort zone. I was able to care a little more about people and get past my personal walls of narrow view and depth of vision concerning a scene and people in general that usually I wouldn't think twice about.

I was able to grow photographically by learning a wide variety of things from focusing on layering my images better to quickly reading a scene and evaluating how to capture parts of it. I learned to look a little past the obvious, and instead of seeing blank faces I was able to see people... and talk to them. Once I was able to get past the fear of talking to strangers, the comfort of being a fly on the wall and looking at my assignment as "nothing going on" I found myself sitting for long stints of time talking to people about their lost loved ones, their pets, their pasts, and their lives in general. I was amazed at how cool a lot of people really are when you give them a chance and open your mind. My photos went from a lot of the backs of people's heads to more faces and genuine interaction (well as much as goes on at a truck stop between strangers ^_^ and without me joining in on Trucker showering action).

A HUGE thanks to Huy and all the crew for making it all happen, and a personal thanks to Tim Zeilenbach and Cheryl Diaz Meyer for sticking it to me and encouraging me to get out of my comfort zone and change as a person. Also a big thanks to Linda for having a warm sense of faith in me. It really was a personal challenge for me to shoot the truck stop as it was not an ideal assignment for me at first. I'm sure I will still do the "tilty-tilty" or kill people with my "frickin' wide angle verticles", and super fisheye madness to a degree, but at the very least but most importantly I feel like I became a better human being. There are many tidbits and skills that I can apply to my wedding photography that I feel will help me grow as a photographer and hopefully show through in the images I make in the future.

Now I'll share some random pics from the week... nothing special really... other than that they're of people I like. ^_^ I didn't take that many pics at all, and on a lot of them are very snappy... but here they are

<img style="margin: 0px auto 10px; What a week, eh?

First, I want to apologize to Leigh, Cameron, and Tony for sleeping late and missing the 6am meeting time yesterday. I feel horribly irresponsible. Whoever ultimately gave them a ride, thank you so much, and I'm sorry! I hate letting people down.

I missed my flight, but made it out a few hours later. I came home and went straight to the doctor, who diagnosed me with walking pneumonia. That's better than crawling pneumonia, but not as good as jogging or running pneumonia. I was also diagnosed with sleep deprivation and an ass-tastic hangover. Serves me right.

This week was amazing. I made a whole bunch of great new friends. I learned so, so much. I got to watch a group of talented photographers gain the confidence to see and shoot without boundaries, and the results blew me away.

More later. I have six zillion emails to return and a family to bother.

thank you

I hope that all of you have arrived home safely and are getting much deserved rest.

I really want to say 2 things:

1. I am very very proud of you and your workshop images. You came up with some amazing, powerful images in less than two days of shooting. Those photo stories rival any that I have done and seen in newspapers that I've come across. Truthfully, the caliber of your workshop images surprised me. But hell yeah, you did it!!!!!! Seeing those images gave me reason and purpose to continue this Workshop in the future.

2. I'd like to sincerely thank you for trusting me and our workshop instructors enough to invest your time and energy to come to Dallas. I hope that we've succeeded in challenging your thought processes while also providing you with very practical photographic skills and knowledge.

As we're always looking for ways to improve the structure, format, or organization of the workshop, I'd like to hear your thoughts, ideas, and suggestions. This year, we came up with some very cool, innovative techniques (Cheryl's photo obstacle course, my team's shooting challenge to me, etc) that we will definitely implement in the future. I know it can flow alot better and I am ready to make those changes to improve the workshop.

This is your chance to critique us :) I'd like to hear your honest assessments. I appreciate you taking the time to share your thoughts with me privately at huy@fworkshop.com or will all of us on this blog.

Also, please feel free to post and share any photos or your work from the workshop. There are many interested photographers wondering what we did.

Again, I am grateful to you for coming together to produce a very unique experience that will never be duplicated.

Thank you. Someone is picking us up, right? Is it going to be limo-style, i.e. a person with a card with our name at it, or a bus or what?

Is Day One more lecture style sitting at desks, more interactive, case studies vs. theory??

For Life or Family shoots, I'm still not 100 percent sure what is going on here. I have a life shoot and would like to know a little more about our role and assignments so I can start brainstorming. In my mind, I'm thinking it's similar to an intense two-day feature story package, but I honestly don't know. Is the goal that 1 perfect shot? Is it comprehensive coverage? etc. Do participants create a title and story of pictures? I'm curious because we have wedding shooters and newspaper shooters as instructors, so any more insight would help.

Thanks! Definitely use the time to make friends, network, and get to know one another. (The shooting coaches are there specifically for you to pick their brains).

We'll be in McKinney, TX which is about 45 minutes from downtown Dallas and 1.5 hours from Fort Worth. McKinney is quiet suburb with a small town flavor so don't count on it for a party atmosphere.

The FW4 schedule is pretty packed. You'll be spending all day Monday at the ranch and then have your first team meetings that night. Tuesday and Wednesday are full shooting/editing days. You can plan on getting up early to go to your assignments and staying up late for the edits. There may be time in between that you can catch a break or two. Thursday could be more of a free day if you have all your images selected and readied for the slideshow presentation. You could head into Dallas and be back in time for the presentations that night. After the presentations, we can do whatever :)

Friday is a travel day for most of you. But for those who stay behind, we can go to my studio for awhile or crash at Brook Whittington's place. I am open to any idea for fun and games :)

Equipment Questions (and Answers)

Jerry, I am glad you asked.

Adding to Jerry's post:

At FW4, you will not be working on your own laptops. Each team leader will have an editing station where he/she will conduct the critiques and edits publicly. Images will be projected on the wall :) All of your images will be downloaded to the editing computer before each session.

You may want to bring your own laptops and play with your images during down times but it's not a requirement. Having a calibrated system is extremely optional. We'll be focusing more on the content of images rather than technical quality of post production work. We'll be teaching thinking, seeing, and shooting rather than digital manipulation or Photoshop skills.

You'll be shooting JPGS and there will be a limit on the number of images so I'd suggest bringing 3-6 GBs if you don't want to download and reuse cards.

We also suggest not bringing alot of photo gear. Because you'll be hanging out with your subjects and possibly have to move from place to place unexpectedly, you'll want to travel light.
There's also no need for any long lenses or overlapping backup lenses. If you need something in a pinch, I am sure we can loan it to you.

Suggested gear: a small camera bag, 2 cameras, 1 wide angle, 1 medium, 1 long zoom, 1-2 flashes with off-camera cords, batteries, cards, etc. That's it! (a little less than a destination wedding. don't you think?)

Dress will be casual and appropriate to the assignment. Even if you have to be in a business environment, slacks and long sleeved shirt should be enough. Everyone's casual here. Wear comfortable shoes, of course.

I hope that answers most of your gear questions. Please feel free to ask in the comments section of this post. Huy

_______________________________________________________
I hate to post this here, it seems like a waste of BLOG space, if that's even remotely possible. However, I have two things on my mind that I am kind of embarrassed to ask, but if I don't I'll be more embarrassed when I show up in Texas ill prepared.

1) How much crap do we bring? I'm thinking simple. So, 2 camera bodies (1 main, 1 for backup). A few lenses, and a flash. Simple, simple. But, am I crazy? Should I bring more stuff? Should I bring all my CF cards, or just a few. I really don't have a sense at all for what I need and what we will be doing. So, ANY guidance will be much appreciated. Should I just pretend like I am doing a destination wedding? Or is it way more simple than that?

2) My laptop that I will have with me does not have a calibrated LCD. It is not possible to calibrate it. So, images look good on that laptop, but they look horrible when transferred to a calibrated monitor. My question is, is this going to be a problem? If I am going to display images, it's OK if I do it from my laptop and project them, I think. But, if they are going to be displayed from a different computer, than I guess I have to figure out a solution right quick. Any suggestions would be great. Again, I have the Eye One monitor thingy that I use, but the laptop LCD I have doesn't allow for monitor calibration, I have a separate 19" monitor that I use for that.

Thanks for any info anyone can provide.

Much appreciated, and I am so excited I can't stand it!

See ya'll soon,
Jerry

Day One

FW4 officially starts on February 20, 2006 with Day One, a series of presentations by team leaders David, Cheryl, Huy and Amy plus three of our faculty : Cliff Mautner, Craig Strong and Linda Wallace.

It will be held at a location with a distinctive Texas flavor where we will spend a long day just thinkin' and talkin' photography and getting in gear for some intensive shooting days ahead.

We will also welcome a small group of non-FW4 participants joining us for the fun.

FW4 Day One (schedule subject to change)

9 am : Welcome and Introductions
9:15 am - 10:30 am : David Leeson
10:30 am - 11:30 am : Cheryl Diaz Meyer
11:30 am - 12:30 pm : Huy

12:30 pm - 1:30 pm : LUNCH BREAK

1:30 pm - 2:30pm : Cliff Mautner
2:30 pm - 3:30 pm : Linda Wallace
3:30 pm - 4:30 pm : Craig Strong

4:30 pm - 5 pm : BREAK

5 pm - 6:30 pm - Amy Deputy

6:30 pm - 8 pm : DINNER BREAK

8 pm : FW4 Team Meetings at Best Western (all non-FW4 attendees are welcomed to attend)

Blog in!

Former FW participants, please blog in with your thoughts about your experience at previous Workshops.
